[Mechanism of Deep Earthquake Occurrence] It has been discovered that the "invisible flow of water" within plates controls deep earthquakes and large deformations of plates [Okayama University, et al.].

Associate Professor Takayuki Ishii from the Graduate School of Natural Science and Technology at Okayama University, along with an international research team from Peking University and the Beijing High Pressure Science Research Center, recreated the environment inside the subducting plate through high-temperature and high-pressure experiments, revealing that the "movement of water" within the plate is significantly related to the occurrence of deep earthquakes.
