Once upon a time, there was a poor but kind couple, an old man and an old woman, living in a mountain village. One morning, the old man decided to go to the mountains to gather wild vegetables during his break from farm work. The old woman made two large salt rice balls for her hardworking husband. The old woman's salt rice balls were the best treat for the old man. Take care. Ah, I'm off then. The old man, carrying a large basket on his back, climbed the back mountain as usual. That day, he found an unexpectedly large number of wild vegetables, such as bracken, fern, and taranome. The old man ventured deeper into the mountains where he usually didn't go. Before he knew it, he had come to a ridge where he could see the house where the old woman was waiting far below. Let's have lunch around here. Oops, oh dear. Oh my. Oh. Ah, the old woman's salted rice ball. It might just fall into a very deep hole. Hey, old man. Give me more, give me more. Salt rice ball. What a thing this is. As I tried to listen more closely, I put my hand inside the hole. Grandpa, oh grandpa. Give me more, give me more. Salt rice ball. Who wants the old woman's salt rice ball? It's no wonder. It's not easy to find such delicious salt rice balls. Oh. Old man. You are about to go to the Pure Land. However, that is not the Pure Land of humans. Be sure not to imitate a cat. Saying that, the Jizo statue disappeared. This time, a white mouse appeared. Old man, old man. Is that salt rice ball yours? Yes. I have never eaten such a delicious salt rice ball. The old man, pleased by the praise for the old woman's salted rice ball, gave another salted rice ball. The mice that had gathered before he knew it were overjoyed. Grandpa, grandpa. This is the paradise of the mice. Before he knew it, a light spread out before the old man's eyes like a starry sky. We were preparing for our annual festival and unexpectedly enjoyed the salted rice balls. Please come and see our festival. Invited by the mice, I was treated to a performance of dancing and singing. Well, while doing so, the old man remembered the old woman and thought it was about time he should return. I should be taking my leave soon. Grandpa, please wait for me. I prepared two treasure chests, one big and one small. This is a thank you gift for the grandpa and the grandma who made the salt rice balls, so please take it. The big treasure chest is heavy and troublesome to carry down the mountain. I'll take the smaller one. As Grandpa shouldered the small box, he was seen off by the mice as he left the hole. It was already night outside. I'm back now. Grandpa, did something happen in the mountains? What do you mean by something? What should I talk about first? The old man talked about what happened in the mountains. And when he opened the treasure chest he received, it was filled with gold coins and fine cloth. Seeing the happy old woman made the old man feel somewhat joyful. The next morning, the old man living in the neighboring property came to deliver a basket filled with wild vegetables he had picked in the mountains yesterday. Did he leave the important wild vegetables behind? What is that? The old man shared the story he had seen in the land of the mice. Then, I said, I will also go and quickly return with the larger treasure chest. When he returned home, he immediately started making rice balls with the leftover scorched rice. Thinking it would be better to have more, I made three and headed straight for the mountain. As I went down over the roots of the trees, there was indeed a hole. I quickly tossed in the rice balls, but there was no sound at all. Even though I had given the rice balls, there was not even one of the usual responses. It went inside on its own. Soon, a shining Jizo appeared and warned me not to imitate cats, as this was the paradise of mice. After a while, I found the rice ball I had just tossed on the ground. What is this? Is today's rice ball not to my taste? Oh, is this the paradise of mice? From here on is the paradise of the mice, so please refrain from going any further. The old man next door just needs to bring back the treasure chest. He thought he had no business with the mice. Then. The mice all suddenly ran away. Then the starry sky disappeared, and it became completely dark. The old man next door tried to find the treasure chest by feeling around, but he couldn't find it at all and ended up getting lost. He finally crawled out of the hole, but three days and nights had passed since he entered it. After a while, he searched for the hole, but he couldn't find it at all.
