Yes, well, Valentine's Day is coming soon. In Japan, tomorrow is Valentine's Day. Right, so today I'm going to talk about Japanese Valentine's Day. Japanese Valentine's Day is different from Western Valentine's Day. First, what do you do on Valentine's Day in your country? Well, generally Valentine's Day is a bit of a romantic day, right? It's a day for couples. Men buy red roses for women, right? You have to reserve a nice restaurant for the evening, don't you? Men might give presents to women. Well, of course it varies by person. Also, it varies by country, of course. So, what do you think Japanese Valentine's Day is like? In Japan, it's basically a day when women give chocolate to men. Well, it's interesting, isn't it? Well, they give chocolate or cookies. Women sometimes give homemade chocolate. Sometimes they buy chocolate from a store and give it. In Japan, Valentine's Day is also a romantic day. But in Japan, women also give chocolate to their male friends. It's interesting. Uh, the chocolate you give to someone you truly love is called 'honmei chocolate'. And, uh, the chocolate you give to friends or coworkers is called 'giri chocolate'. Sometimes women buy chocolate for themselves. Well, they don't usually buy it, but on Valentine's Day, they buy themselves a slightly expensive chocolate. It's interesting, isn't it? So, it's an event that almost everyone can enjoy. But, yeah, when I was a child, it was a tough event. Hmm, people who were really popular received twenty chocolates. That's right, in Japan, even if you're not a couple, you give chocolate to someone you like. Well, especially when you're a student, yes. When you become an adult, if you're not a couple, you might not give 'honmei' chocolate (chocolate for one's true love). But yes, when you're a child, popular people can get a lot of chocolate, but unpopular people don't get any at all. If you don't get any, it's a shock, right? It's cruel. Well, sometimes I compete with my friends. We compete over who can get more chocolates. When I was a kid, when Valentine's Day got close, I would talk a lot with girls, get friendly, and say, 'Please give me chocolate on Valentine's Day.' Yes. Well, honestly, even obligation chocolate makes me happy, right? Well, really kind people make chocolate for everyone in the class. That's really kind, isn't it? Also, women give chocolate to other women. Well, chocolate is delicious, after all. Yes. So really, Valentine's Day in Japan is a chocolate event. It's an event for women and chocolate. Well, in Japan, one month after February 14th, there is a day called White Day on March 14th. This is a day when men give presents to women. When a man receives chocolate from his girlfriend, he also gives some kind of present. Usually they buy it at a store, but sometimes they make cookies or chocolate. I also remember making White Day cookies with my friends when I was a student. Well, it's tough for people who receive a lot of chocolate on Valentine's Day. I have to buy a lot of presents. Until I went abroad, I didn't know about this Western Valentine's Day culture, so I was surprised when I first learned about it. Well, my wife is Chilean, so now we celebrate Valentine's Day in the Chilean style. But sometimes we don't do Valentine's Day. Hmm, there are just too many events in a year, aren't there? Birthdays, Christmas, Halloween, New Year's. Yes. So sometimes there are years we don't do Valentine's Day. How is it in your country? What about you?
