Beginner's Genki Level. Alcohol Snack. Hello everyone. I'm Shun, a Japanese teacher. How are you? Well, today I'd like to talk about otsumami (snacks with alcohol). Do you eat snacks when you drink alcohol? In Japan, there are really many kinds of otsumami. Well, I often eat potato chips, um, a little salty food. I also eat dried squid and sashimi. When I drink alcohol, I always want to eat something with it. At home, I often eat a snack called Kaki no Tane while drinking beer. It's delicious, you know. My wife loves potato chips and french fries. They're not healthy, but they're delicious. My wife is Chilean. In Chile, they often ate potato chips, olives, cheese, and peanuts as snacks with alcohol. In Japan, we don't usually eat olives while drinking alcohol, but they're delicious. Especially when drinking wine, olives and cheese are good, aren't they? When I went to the Netherlands, I ate something like fried cheese balls. This was really delicious. In the Netherlands, I was drinking beer with friends at an outdoor bar from the afternoon. It was the best. Well, in Japan, some people sometimes cook otsumami (snacks). Japanese otsumami are a bit similar to izakaya dishes, aren't they? So I think Japanese people love otsumami. Even people who don't like alcohol sometimes go to izakaya because the otsumami are delicious. I also love otsumami. I think that if the snack is delicious, the alcohol becomes even more delicious. But sometimes snacks aren't healthy, are they? Because there are many dishes that use a lot of oil. That's why they say that if you drink a lot of alcohol, you gain weight. Well, I lived in Canada and New Zealand, but there most people didn't eat snacks. Everyone drank a lot of beer without eating many snacks. On the bar menu, there were often nuts, chicken wings, and french fries. I often ordered potatoes and drank beer while eating them, but my European friends only drank beer. That's interesting. Yes. Do people in other countries also have the habit of eating snacks with alcohol? What about when drinking wine? In New Zealand too, when drinking wine, people often ate ham and cheese. But indeed, ham and cheese really go well with wine, don't they? People who really like wine and cheese change the cheese they eat depending on the wine they drink, right? Also, wine is often consumed with dinner, isn't it? When eating meat, people often drink red wine. When eating fish, people often drink white wine, right. Yeah. Well, I'm not very knowledgeable, but I think wine is really interesting. I thought I wanted to study more about wine.
