Hello everyone.
What station have I arrived at now? Please listen for the station name. Yoyogi Park, Yoyogi Park. Please watch your step. How was it? If you didn't know, you might not have caught it. It said Yoyogi Park. Today I will introduce Yoyogi Park in Shibuya, Tokyo. First, let's exit the ticket gate and head toward Exit 4. Go up the stairs and go outside. Walk for about three minutes to the right, and you'll see the park gate. Let's enter from here. It's the west gate. Let's take a look at the map. This current location—'current' means present, 'location' means place—so it's where we are now. It's spacious, isn't it? I hear Yoyogi Park is the sixth largest park in Tokyo. I don't know where to go, so let's head over there for now. There are people running. Oh, now they're walking. Maybe they're tired because it's a slope? It says "Please do not enter." That means "Do not enter." Let's go over here for a bit. There are lots of fallen leaves. Today was November 26th. So, to see the autumn leaves, maybe around mid-November is good. There's something over there. Let's go. It says 'The place of Japan's first flight.' So this is where the first airplane flew. I heard this used to be an army base. I didn't know that. It rained until morning that day, so the ground is wet. But the sun is coming out now. It's bright. There's a fountain. Oh, you call it a fountain. This is how it's written in kanji. This is also a small fountain. This kanji means 'to spurt out', and this kanji means 'water'. If you change the water part to fire, it becomes 'eruption'. That's because fire spurts out. Can you visualize it? It's good to associate and visualize kanji like this. There are stairs, so let's go a little further. This is a pedestrian bridge. It's written as 'bridge for walking path'. Oh, that's an ambulance. There's some kind of event going on. It was a Spain Festa. Yes. Now I'll head back to the park from here. This time I'll cross the road. I wonder what it is. I wonder what kind of tree it is. Very beautiful. Oh. There are people taking photos. This is a perfect spot for taking photos. I think if we had come a little earlier, it would have been even more bright yellow and very beautiful. Do you know what this tree with yellow leaves is? This is a ginkgo tree. Ginkgo trees have male and female trees. And female trees bear fruit. It's the same as with blueberries. The fruit has also fallen, so let's take a look. This round thing is the fruit. They're squashed. These fruits smell. So you can tell right away when the fruit has fallen. The seeds inside the fruit are edible. Inside the hard shell, there is a soft yellow-green kernel. This is what we call ginkgo nuts. Ginkgo nuts are very delicious. If you'd like to try them, when you go to a conveyor belt sushi restaurant, order something called chawanmushi. There will be one or two pieces in it. This place is beautiful too. Can you hear the crows cawing? In Japan, crows go "caw caw". How do crows sound in your language? By the way, do you know the kanji for "bird"? This is "bird". This kanji was formed from the shape of a bird. Now, the kanji for "crow" is written like this. What is the difference? That's right, "crow" is missing one line. Actually, this part of "bird" represents an eye. But crows are black, so we can't see their eyes. So we removed that part of the line. Isn't that interesting? My cat is a black cat, so sometimes I can't tell where his parts are. He is very cute. They say Yoyogi Park is the place in Tokyo where you can see the widest sky. I think this is probably that place, so let's go see. When I heard the phrase 'the widest sky in Tokyo,' I thought of a certain poem. It is a poem by a man named Takamura Kotaro. It begins with the line, 'Chieko says Tokyo has no sky.' Chieko is the wife of Kotaro Takamura. Since it's a short poem, I will write the whole text in the description, but please let me read only the last five lines. Chieko speaks while looking into the distance. It is an innocent story about the sky, that the blue sky that appears every day above Mount Adatara is Chieko's true sky. Chieko is from Fukushima Prefecture, where Mount Adatara is located. She married Kotaro Takamura and lived in Tokyo, but she seems to have never quite adjusted to Tokyo. In the end, she develops a mental illness. This poem has a cute content, but I think it's a sad poem. I now live in Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture. The wonderful thing about Kofu is that it is surrounded by mountains on all 360 degrees. No matter which direction I look, there are mountains. Seeing the mountains makes me feel at ease. Actually, I had something to do after this. When I suddenly realized, there were only twenty minutes until my meeting. The park is so big that it will probably take more than ten minutes just to get out, so I started to feel like I might be late. So, that's all for today's video. Let's meet again in the next video. Goodbye.
